The communityWhat this is
African Angels Community is an application-based community of individual investors working across Africa, the diaspora and a widening circle of global allies.
Our purpose is narrow and we keep it that way: venture education and stronger networks. We convene angels so that the craft of backing early companies on this continent is taught properly, argued about openly and practised alongside people who have done it before. Membership carries no fee. Every applicant is vetted and what is said inside the community stays inside it.
We are not a replacement for the networks our members already belong to. Members keep those memberships. This is the room they share across them - built and led from the African continent.
Why it existsFour gaps
Networks serve their members well. The craft itself is still mostly learned by doing, alone and at your own cost, with little shared body of practice to inherit across borders.
National networks are strong and continental federations connect them well at the institutional level. Individual members still meet mostly within their own network - a Lagos angel and a Nairobi angel rarely have a standing reason to be in the same room.
Inside one network, everyone calibrates against the same people. It is hard to tell whether your standards are genuinely rigorous or simply the local habit.
Even inside a good network, it is a quiet discipline. The people who understand the particular weight of backing a founder early are few, scattered and seldom in contact with one another.

Members meet through a standing programme of working sessions, online and in person.
The detail goes to members. That is the point of the ring in our mark: a closed circle rather than an open room.
Who it is forFour kinds of member
You have been backing founders for years. What you want is peers who will be straight with you rather than impressed by you.
You built something, you have begun backing others and you would rather learn the craft properly than expensively.
You back companies on the continent from somewhere else - whether your roots are here or only your conviction is. You want the ground truth, from people standing on it.
You belong to a national angel group and want the continental view alongside it, not instead of it.
